An interesting piece of babble just landed in our box. If we are to believe what we're reading, it's a letter from Observer staffer-cum-swan Jessica Joffe's concubine, lovable indie rock schizo Ryan Adams:

I am not sure if Jossip or Gawker started this b.s. tear down of JJ, but I think it is very unfair to attempt to humiliate someone so obviously "not-asking for this" kind of thing. Waterboy, it's pretty dumb to misrepresent what someone (in this case, Ryan) does in order to knock it more easily.

Unfortunately Gawker was making fun of Jessica Joffe before her name was linked with Ryan, I think. And if someone made fun of me just for the sake of being mean, I'd want someone to stand up for me too. Good for you, Ryan. I think it's sweet.

Honestly, I fully respect Ryan for defending his girlfriend or whatever, but keep it in perspective. I don't recall anyone here freaking out & getting all sanctimonious when Ryan publicly took the piss out of Jeff Tweedy or Jack White or whatever. (But I expect you'll all draw some weird hair-splitting distinction to explain that away. Jeff Tweedy was asking for it by putting out his album for free on the web, while all JJ wants to do is innocently shill sweatshop shirts.)

I do see your point, it's not like Ryan hasn't said mean things about other people in the past BUT the weird hair-splitting distinction is that it seems the sole purpose of jossip/gawker is to take the piss out of celebrities. I have checked out jossip a couple of times,and most of it seems to be tongue-in-cheek,but having looked at gawker for the first time...well, that site is just flat out mean. I think gawker crosses the line from taking the piss to being incredibly vicious.

Maybe ryan's comments will stir things up more, but it must be nice to have a friend/boyfriend who will enter a public forum to defend your honour.

Although Ryan does seem to spend WAY too much time checking out these tabloidy type of websites. It must be awful to have people slate you and your friends continuously, but I don't think participating in the debates helps things. I mean, it's not going to stop them writing these things - it's just providing them with more ammunition.

Then again, if those people said mean things about me, I'd probably get ragey and want to defend myself.

But taking the piss out of celebrities can sometimes be good and funny...think of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Ali G, etc. Jossip's real shortcoming is that none of their jokes are funny or insightful, and their writing has a distinctly retarded air to it.
